Egress and Corridor Separation
Safeguarding key escape routes is crucial for busy hospitals, stadiums, and retail areas. Coopers has developed curtains specifically designed to contain smoke and fire in corridors, allowing egress while fulfilling fire regulations.
Boundary Protection
Traditional solutions for external boundaries can be restrictive and costly. Coopers Fire barrier curtains instead offer a streamlined, approved alternative that stops the spread of fire and protects windows from channeling flames.
Compartmentation
Large venues depend on Coopers smoke and fire curtains to form discrete compartments. This advanced approach helps safeguard occupants while ensuring regulatory compliance in expansive spaces.
Stairs and Escalators
FireMaster Concertina™ and other Coopers systems remain hidden within the ceiling until activated, effectively preventing smoke from rising through stairwells or escalator wells.
Lift and Lift Lobbies
Coopers Fire curtains with smoke control can be installed over lift doors or form virtual lift lobbies, stopping fire and smoke from spreading between floors. This preserves open-plan lobby designs while meeting strict building codes.
Protected Means of Escape
Reimagining open-plan environments doesn’t have to mean compromising safety. Coopers Fire barriers are fully approved to protect vital egress routes, reducing the need for bulky walls and doors while still adhering to fire regulations.

Fire Curtains FAQ's
Frequently asked questions about fire curtains and fire compliance products.
What does Coopers do
There are many challenges associated with building compartmentation and passive fire protection in large commercial settings. As open-plan buildings become increasingly popular, using fire doors has become more difficult, since there are no walls. The installation of fire curtains is an alternative to fire doors in places where they are not possible.
For increased fire resistance and smoke control, fire curtains can replace fire doors, as they offer the same level of fire resistance and smoke control. According to the building requirements, fire curtains can be fixed inside walls and ceilings, or externally. Due to their gravity fail-to-safe operation, they will stay in place and remain hidden, always ready to drop in case of a fire, even if all areas of power cannot be used.
What is a fire curtain
A fire curtain is, in simple terms, a high-quality piece of fire-resistant material that is discretely installed within a header box placed in the ceiling or bulkhead. It is lowered/deploys when the smoke or fire alarm within a building is triggered. It is crucial to create compartmentation within the building to prevent flames from spreading either vertically or laterally. Once lowered/deployed, the curtain then becomes an effective barrier between the fire and the escape routes allowing the building occupants to evacuate safely.
Why Fire Curtains
In fire incidents, excessive inhalation of smoke, toxic fumes, and gases continue to be the leading cause of death. Fire curtains help prevent the spread of smoke and flames, reducing the chance of death.
An effective fire curtain may suppress the growth and development of a fire and smoke inside a room while preventing its spread. Fire curtains have three major purposes in a building: to limit the initial development of a fire, to prevent the spread of fire, and to provide escape routes.
What are the purposes of fire curtains
One of the main benefits of fire curtains as part of a building’s safety regime is that they can be, and generally are, located in several areas throughout a building. A fire curtain is generally lightweight, seldom needing additional support which means they rarely change the design of the building. It can be used to replace a non-load bearing wall and/or fire rated glazing. This allows for open plan building designs to meet the relevant regulations. Elevators and lobbies can also be protected by these curtains, which prevent the spread of smoke and flames through the shaft.
Level of Integrity
Components used in the building construction are being scrutinized more carefully for their fire resistance and integrity. Thus, the integrity of every product has become a higher priority. Fire tests for curtains and other fire barriers are done to investigate how it maintains its integrity when exposed to fire and smoke. These findings help illustrate a product’s fire/smoke resistance level. The certificate issued in the UK is EN BS1634-1 which is in accordance with the EN 12101-1 certification.
Where are fire curtains installed
As previously mentioned, fire curtains have minimal installation limitations. A fire curtain can be used to allow open-plan building designs to still meet fire regulations. Areas where there are stairs, atriums, lifts or lobbies, which are the most critical escape routes, can employ fire curtains to help control fire/smoke and prevent fire/smoke from spreading through the staircase and lift shafts, etc. The vast range of curtain designs and solutions will allow for vertical and lateral/horizontal installations.
How can Apex Engineering help
Apex Engineering’s team is equipped with vast knowledge and experience within the fire and smoke control industry. This allows us to not only assist with the installation of fire/smoke curtains but also get involved with the initial specification process. When we are involved at an early design stage we can pre-empt where the fire/smoke curtain may be required, therefore, mitigating any possible design changes. We can retrofit fire/smoke curtains to existing buildings in order for the building to comply with regulations. We are also able to assist with pre-tender budget pricing.
Apex Engineering offers a full turnkey solution in the design, supply, installation, maintenance and service backup on smoke/fire curtain systems.
